Talbot paramedics mark 25 years
09-28-2010
EASTON — Talbot Paramedic
Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary Saturday with a crowd of more than 200 at East Coast Flight Service’s 12,000-square-foot hanger.

The event was filled with dozens of proclamation presentations celebrating the story of the first five all volunteer paramedics starting the emergency service a quarter century ago — Wayne Dyott, Gary Jones,Leroy Taylor Jr., Kevin Knussman and Marc Stockley.

The event also revealed the success of the five Talbot citizens vying for the title of “Character of Talbot County” by raising the most funds for the replacement of five-year-old heart monitor/defibrillators carried on each paramedic unit.Cornelia Heckenbach, Miranda McKay, Chris Brian, John Murray and Dan Bridges raised more than $38,000 over the last several months for the purchase.

Bridges, who won the first Character of Talbot County title, said, “I’ve lived my whole life in the county, and I think the negative connotation of this title fits me better than the positive. I couldn’t be prouder of the people in this county who in these economic times gave the amounts they did, I think it is fantastic.”

Oxford Greens catered the event, filling the hanger with sparking lights on trees loaned by Robins Nest Florist. An antique Stearman biplane provided by Joe Caccamise, and a Maryland State Police helicopter decorated the open entrance to the hanger with a bandstand used by musicians from A Classic Case. A large image of the event’s poster created by Alexey Ikonomou of DiagonalBaltimore.com was projected on the massive walls.

Everyone in attendance got an opportunity to witness the emergency services in action as Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 6 was dispatched during the party to take an accident victim to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

Propeller wash from the blades whooshed across the room as the jet engines roared the chopper into the air at 7:49 p.m. It returned an hour later.Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Mid-Shore, Dels. Addie Eckardt, R-37BDorchester,and Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, R-37B-Talbot, and Talbot Council President Levin F. “Buddy” Harrison IV presented proclamations to the five original volunteers.

Proclamations also were presented to Talbot Paramedic Foundation President Will Howard, Vice President Wayne Dyott,Secretary/Treasurer Sheila Wainwright and founding board member Sylvia Gannon for their 25 years of continuous service.Harrison, a former paramedic, reminded guests of the struggles and frustration of surviving the early days of the effort.“We had battles on every front,” he said. “The first time we met with the county council, we didn’t get anything.”

Harrison described the tension of dealing with the council to get funding in one meeting.“The questions they were asking us were so off the wall ...” said Harrison. “We went back into budget session the following years and got $5,000 to buy a $25,000 truck.”

The Talbot County Council fully funded the program when both Harrison and Dyott won seats on the council in 1998. It is now the largest agency in the county government with 82 full- and part-time employees and five stations throughout the county.

In 2001, the Talbot Paramedic Foundation and the Talbot County Council were jointly cited by the International Association of Fire Chiefs for having one of the safest small towns in the country after distributing more than a hundred defibrillators in all county offices and private businesses.

Harrison also presented proclamations to Dr. David Hill, Dr. Charles Schoenfeld, Marge Callahan-Palazzolo, Shore Health System and Easton Volunteer Fire Department,“who — without their support, vision and belief we would have gotten nowhere.”

The Star Democrat, WCEI Radio,East Coast Flight Service, C.H.Gannon & Sons, Provident State Bank, V. F. W. Post 5118, Pascal’s Restaurant & Tavern and Shore
Health System sponsored the event.

Character Bowl set to mark paramedics’ 25th anniversary
07-29-2010
ST. MICHAELS Cornelia Heckenbach, an award winning associate broker at Lacaze Meredith Real Estate in St. Michaels, has volunteered to raise money to purchase life-saving equipment enabling Talbot Paramedics with state of the art equipment.

She will be one of five contestants in the first Talbot Character Bowl, a party being held Sept. 18, celebrating Talbot Paramedic's 25th anniversary. Each contestant will raise money to become "Talbot Character of the Year." Totals will be announced at the event and the one with the most money will win.

Other contestants include Chris Brian, Dan Bridges, John Murray and Miranda McKay. They will be appealing to their friends and acquaintances by mail to contribute to purchase high-tech cardiac monitor/defibrillators for Talbot's paramedic units.

Heckenbach, originally from Munich, Germany, moved to Talbot County in 1990. She and her husband Udo, a German architect/developer, initially shared their time between Talbot County and Munich. In 1994, they decided to make Talbot County their primary home. She has a business education, is multilingual, worked in the fashion industry, started her real estate career overseas in the 1980s and owned and operated a hotel in Munich for five years.

Attributing her devotion to her customers for her success, she earned the position as the overall company's top selling agent and repeatedly the St. Michaels office leading agent. She ranks among the top one percent real estate professionals nationwide among the Top 100 Long and Foster agents within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., and she has earned the most prestigious Long and Foster Master Club award.

Heckenbach also is devoted to the safety and citizen and was very anxious to volunteer to raise money for the emergency equipment. "I was given a tour of Talbot's emergency operations facility and am very impressed with the dedication of all of those associated with saving lives," she said. "Our existing heart attack equipment is five years old and we need to get these Life Pack 15s."

"The Life Pack 15 is the state-of-the-art unit," said Clay Stamp, director of Emergency Services for Talbot County. "We turned to Talbot Paramedic Foundation for help raising the money to purchase them because of the county's now very tight budget."

"I think this is a great way to celebrate our 25th anniversary," said Will Howard, president of Talbot Paramedic Foundation for 25 years. "Those original five guys are heroes for what they started so many years ago. We want to salute them, as well as the rest of paramedics who went through all the training, to have undoubtedly saved hundreds of lives in this county."

When five young men volunteered to provide Talbot County with the Upper Shore's first paramedic service in 1985, Talbot Paramedic Foundation was formed to support them. Their goal then was to help purchase a vehicle and keep the paramedics supplied as well as to urge the county council to fully fund them.

Now, 25 years later, it is the county's largest department with five paramedic units strategically placed in service 24 hours a day. The foundation plans to celebrate their remarkable anniversary with a fundraiser on Sept. 18.

Tickets may be purchased at Miranda's Shoes, Aqua Pool, Lacaze Meredith Real Estate, Easton and Lacaze Meredith in St. Michaels. The event is being co-sponsored by The Star Democrat, WCEI Radio, the Gannon Family, Provident State Bank, Shore Health System, VFW Post 5118, Pascal's Restaurant & Tavern and East Coast Flight Service.
Cannonball House on the market
05-20-2010
By Michele Lerner SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES

While plenty of people love their homes so much they feel like they own a "trophy house," only a handful of families have the privilege of owning a true landmark. Now, just such a landmark home is on the market: the "Cannonball House" in St. Michaels on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

This historic home, built in 1803, sits on the corner of Mulberry Street and St. Mary's Square at 200 Mulberry St. Built in the classic Federal style for shipbuilder William Merchant, the residence rests in a prime location within steps of the harbor, restaurants and shops that draw visitors to this charming town.

The Cannonball House received its name for a shocking event that happened in the War of 1812 during the British assault on St. Michaels. According to local legend, the residents of St. Michaels hung lanterns in the treetops and kept their homes dark during the British siege, hoping to confuse the gunners.

The ruse usually worked quite well and the British missed most of the homes, but one cannonball grazed the chimney on Merchant's home, ricocheted off the chimney stack and ripped through a dormer window into the residence. The cannonball then bounced down the steps, surprising Merchant's wife. Burn marks are still visible on the stairs.

On the market for $1,495,000, this home rests between the St. Michaels Harbour Inn and Marina and the St. Michaels Museum. Its historic presence relies not only on the legend of the cannonball, but also on the architectural significance of the residence. The imposing brick detached home features Flemish bond bricks with delicate mortar joints and finely laid arches above each window. Ionic columns surround the front door.

Inside, the most distinctive features include original woodwork with herringbone-patterned chair-rail moldings, elaborate mantels, six-panel solid wood doors, and archways in the first- and second-floor halls. A brick kitchen wing, built at the same time as the original residence, is attached to the east side of the home, while the south side features an enclosed porch.

This home has three finished levels with six fireplaces set on a lot of approximately 6,000 square feet. The property's original brick walls enclose a landscaped private garden with plenty of space for entertaining outdoors, dining under the stars or even adding a swimming pool if desired. A newly renovated guest house offers a private space for the countless visitors this home is sure to attract.

The traditional double-parlor floor plan provides plenty of indoor space for entertaining. The living room includes hardwood flooring and a wood-burning fireplace, while the dining room has hardwood flooring and a decorative fireplace.

The kitchen, renovated in 2006, has ceramic tile flooring. Nearby is a sunroom with walls of picture windows and a side door to the yard.

Upstairs, the master suite has hardwood flooring and a wood-burning fireplace. An additional bedroom and full bath are on the second level, with two more bedrooms and two more baths on the upper level.

Resort home: Garden, river view on Easte
02-20-2009
Source: Washington Times| By Michele Lerner | Friday, February 20, 2009

Set within park-like grounds on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Seaglass on the Miles is an estate that includes a charming landscaped garden with boxwood hedges and perennial plantings. Brick paths link the garden with the main house, a three-car garage and a four-room carriage house for guests.

Steps lead from the grounds to a dock on the Miles River and a sandy beach, a rarity in this section of Talbot County.

The owners and their guests love to search for sea glass on this beach. The grounds also include a heated swimming pool with a river view. The dock has space for two boats, and the entire property has 118 feet of water frontage.

The extensive grounds and expansive views of the Miles River make the home feel as though it is on a private island, yet Seaglass is just minutes away from the historic town center of Easton.

Now on the market for $1,795,000, this property, at 25828 St. Michaels Road, is fenced for privacy and features a unique blend of Old World craftsmanship and 21st-century amenities.

Built in 2000 by a couple who owned an antique shop and built museum-reproduction furniture, this home has been completely custom-designed with meticulous attention to details. For example, the owners installed wood doors, antique wide-plank wood floors, pickled wood flooring upstairs and a checkerboard-design wood floor in one room.

The owners added handmade light fixtures and antique-looking door handles and bathroom fixtures. Just as spectacular as the early American-style details in this home are the wide views of the Miles River from every room and from the multiple porches and decks, which rim the main house and the carriage house.

The recently completed carriage house features wood floors throughout and a great room with oversized wood doors, which can be opened to a scenic river view. The carriage house also has a fireplace, an office and a powder room on the first floor.

Upstairs are two bedrooms and a full bath, plus a deck with sweeping water views.

The main house features hardwood floors throughout and includes a spacious 27-by-15-foot living room on the main level. The unusual combined kitchen and dining area includes antique corner cupboards, a built-in hutch and French doors to the porch.

The main level also has a family room with a fireplace. The first-floor master suite has a private full bath and French doors that open to a porch.

Upstairs are two more bedrooms, each with dramatically sloping ceilings. These two bedrooms share a second full bath.
